Prof. Hrvoje Šikić in Horizon: The EU Research & Innovation Magazine

From 2014 to 2017, BioMedMath founder Professor Hrvoje Šikić, led a research project called MoLeGro, funded by the EU, through which the world’s first mathematical eye lens growth model was developed. The successful merging of mathematical theory with biological insights made it possible to decode the complex biology of eye lens development.

He collaborated on the project with dr. Steven Bassnett, an American biologist and a well-known leader in the field of lens cell biology.

The joint venture created the first mathematical model of lens growth that shows how the cells in the eye’s lens change over time, how the lens develops over a person’s lifetime.

The findings of Šikić’s team were extremely helpful in guiding the techniques of eye surgery.

Together with Bassnett, Šikić is now studying one of the surprising aspects of their research: why the lens of the eye appears to be resistant to cancer.

An article about Professor Šikić’s MoLeGro project and the OBERON project, which is based, among other things, on Professor Šikić’s work, was published on the European Commission’s portal – Horizon The EU Research & Innovation Magazine. You can read it here.
